Subject: Very Delayed Overtaking Statistics #15 - Fuji
Major apologies for the extreme lateness. No particular excuse, just haven't
found time (or inclination).
Introduction for New Readers
============================
2007 is the tenth season that I have posted these amateur overtaking
analyses. My intention was to allow easier comparisons between Grands
Prix, seasons, circuits, drivers, etc.
In order to make any meaningful and/or useful observations it is essential
to produce the stats in as consistent a way as possible. To do this I have
devised several "rules" that I try to follow for each event. Please note
before posting to complain that I missed an obvious passing manoeuvre that
it has probably been excluded because of one of my "rules". The rules are
outlined in the "Disclaimer" below - please read it.
This analysis was mainly derived from the official FIA lap chart, which is
usually available from www.fia.com, http://forix.autosport.com or
www.autosport.com/f1/ on race day or the following day. The original charts
remain copyright of the FIA.
Other excellent Formula One websites are available. This analysis is
completely and totally unofficial.
Disclaimer
==========
For the purposes of this analysis, I only count what I will term "genuine"
passing manoeuvres, which means that I always exclude:
a) any place changes made during pit stops
b) all lapping or unlapping manoeuvres
c) any place changes made during the first lap
Hopefully, a) & b) are obvious. c) is because although lap one is often the
best opportunity to make up places, it is also not typical of the rest of
the race, and so, for the purpose of comparing races with other races and
seasons with other seasons, it is simpler to exclude lap one completely. I
do summarise the changes on lap one later in the post.
For the purposes of this analysis a "pit stop" encompasses the slowing down
lap and the out lap, since any passes during those laps MIGHT be due to the
driver slowing down or speeding up.
Passes are not counted in these stats UNLESS the gained position is held
until the start/finish line is next crossed and so gets recorded onto the
lap chart. I try to ignore anything that isn't recorded in the lap chart,
even if it was seen on TV.
These are the passes I read for the 2007 Japanese GP:

(grid position after any penalties have been applied). Obviously, a driver
who frequently starts from pole position has very little chance to gain
places while one who usually starts at the back of the grid has a good
chance of gaining places.

"For safety reasons the refueling rate is limited to

Subject: Re: Delayed Engine Usage Summary #15 - Fuji
Since posting the Japanese GP engine usage data it has been discovered -
not by me - that Vitantonio Liuzzi started the race in the spare car and
effectively changed engines. That engine was transferred to his race car
for China.
Consequently the data for Liuzzi, Toro Rosso and the Ferrari 056 engine
was incorrect and should be revised to:
18 Vitantonio Liuzzi Ferrari 056 9 5,055 [562]
Toro Rosso Ferrari 056 17 9,519 [560]
Ferrari 056 51 33,178 [651]
The season total of engines increases by one to 186, while the average
kilometres per engine falls to 729.
I will point out that the FIA's Technical Delegate's Report
http://www.fia.com/resources/documents/1312413272__JAP_F1_Official_Report_07.pdf
produced at each GP by Joe Bauer, does not mention the 'change of engine' on
race day - perhaps it should.

1. The reason for the reduction in distance covered is because the FIA
no longer count the Friday practice sessions as part of the event for
engines. Teams now use different engines on Friday and swap to the
'race' engines for Saturday/Sunday.

A fakty wskazują, że:
Hamilton picił na 15 i 31
Alonso 18 i 32
Kimas 19 i 32
Massa 17 i 26
QN 28 i 32
Kubica 25

Fajnie to wymyslili.

Po przeczytaniu tego dochodz=EA do wniosku, =BFe *as they...* odnosi si=EA=
raczej do
kierowc=F3w Ferrari i McL.

To ja poprosz=EA o =BCr=F3d=B3o tej rewelacji z Autoklubu, bo na oficjaln=
ej=20
stronie BMW Sauber napisali co=B6 zgo=B3a odwrotnego:
"It kept on drizzling and everybody defended their positions. From lap=20
16 to 20, the Ferraris and McLarens pitted for fuel but didn't change=20
tyres. The BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers, however, couldn't benefit from=20
the early pit stops of the race leaders
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D> as they were on a one-stop strategy <=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=
=3D=3D
and had already lost too much time to pass the McLarens and Ferraris.
Then, on lap 23, things got hectic. While the race control warned of=20
another rain shower in ten minutes, the track got dryer and dryer and=20
Williams' Alexander Wurz pitted for dry weather tyres. Subsequently, he=20
was clearly faster than everybody else and therefore the BMW Sauber F1=20
Team opted for playing it safe with Nick and taking a risk with Robert."
